Paving Your Driveway on a Limited Budget

May 6th, 2008  Tagged , , , ,

three drivewaysFaced with rising prices on just about everything any more, we often face a need to cut back costs on some of the items, that we once had bigger plans for. Things such as patios or the more exotic stuff like elaborate entryways, walkways and sidewalks bear on this, but driveways are the most cumbersome of all, in this case, owing strictly to the area involved.  Another good thing is they add to the value of your home next time you are looking for a home loan or home equity loan.

When we face a situation like this, a level head and some creative trimming can arrive at a place that we can still work with. Knowing the costs of any project prior to its installation is the key here. Extrapolating from a known figure allows us to come to some conclusions. I will now list 2 options:

Gravel and Base Material

Gravel does not have to look bad, nor does it need to be gravel, as such. The fact is the same base material we work with providing the sub grade for all paving projects can be utilized quite efficiently as a driveway surface. The virtues of base material are a few fold:

1: It compacts extremely durably and can be re compacted and reshaped at any point. Car tires do not really impact it as much as one would think, as long as a sufficient depth and compaction is reached. It is, after all, the structure upon which we base every single other covering.

2. It is in place when we want to upgrade. The next phase will be adding an overlay of cement or asphalt to an already-groomed, compacted area. The labor saving will be substantial in spades.

3. It is not unattractive. Well-compacted base material is the same material taken almost always from rock native to the area. It is almost always produced locally. Graded correctly, this material can allow water to run off appropriately and wash up revealing some fairly effective rustic color. In terms of “finishing elements”, it is also possible that another layer of different, more picturesque gravel could be added for color and general appearance.

The downside, of course, is in the fact that it is granular, therefore erosive. The granular nature will mean some rocks pop up out of the surface of a strictly ‘base’ driveway and, of course, this tends to increase and not decrease. So there is the maintenance aspect to consider. Attention paid to this will not be onerous at all, however, and takes a small amount of time to rectify and re compact.

Asphalt

Asphalt is the least expensive of all the different surfaces offered applied above the base itself. It has all the benefits and detriments of monolithic surfaces, in that it is intact and total as a surface. It is one color and consistent in that. It can be applied in shapes without form material, leaving curved edges, indentations at a designer’s whim, and without the forming and handwork of cement.

Asphalt’s only real disadvantages are that is has a definite life span and that it is monolithic, a problem when dealing with heaving and contracting sub soils in severe cold. Blazing heat can also act to loosen the integrity until it flakes, chips or loses durability in general as well.

There are protecting sealers, such as Slurry Seal that can be applied over the top and which can act to extend the life of an asphalt driveway, but these are required pretty much every year in more severe climates.

Prepare Yourself For Upcoming Recession

recessionPaying $5.00 a gallon for gasolineRecord numbers of home foreclosures

Massive layoffs at top companies

A major stock market crash that wipes out millions of 401K’s and retirement accounts

Record numbers of bankruptcies

If this devastating scenario happened to you, and your family are you prepared?

What can you do about the gasoline price increase?

Although, we can’t change the prices ourselves, there is something you can do. Drive sensibly, aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. Observe your speed limit, each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of speeds), gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Use over drive gears, when you use overdrive gearing, your car’s engine speed goes down. This saves gas and reduces engine wear.

What can to do about Foreclosure?

When you purchased your home, chances are you took out a home loan and your lender took a security interest in the property. In the event that you cannot make your mortgage payments, this security interest gives your lender the right to foreclose–auction off your house and keep the proceeds in order to recover its investment. If your property cannot be sold for what is owed, a deficiency judgment could be pursued against you. Both a foreclosure and a deficiency judgment could seriously affect your ability to qualify for credit in the future. If you are facing this frightening situation there are options. Borrow money from a loved one, contact the lender to work out a deal, refinance your current loan, or sell your home. Don’t get discouraged there other solutions!

Layoffs

The termination of employment of an employee or (more commonly) a group of employees for business reasons, such as the decision that certain positions are no longer necessary. Originally the term “layoff” referred specifically to a temporary interruption in work, as when factory work cyclically falls off. However, the term has long been applied also to the permanent elimination of positions as a cost-cutting measure (or for other reasons). In many U.S. states, workers who are laid off can file an unemployment claim and receive compensation. Depending on local or state laws, workers who leave voluntarily are generally ineligible to collect unemployment benefits. Although you may be tempted to get lazy DON’T, there are many ways to get back on your feet!

Stock Market

The rise of oil prices gave birth to a new industry… alternative energy! An industry forecasted to be worth over $1 trillion within 10 years. With the emergence of China and India, there is massive opportunities to profit from international markets and global stocks. There are great opportunities in undervalued stocks, such as, NASDAQ, OTCBB, and Pink Sheet Markets. Invest in penny stocks by buying them before they are heavily promoted and hyped up in price.

Bankruptcy

Is a legally declared inability or impairment of ability of an individual or organization to pay their creditors. In most cases personal bankruptcy is initiated by the bankrupt individual. Bankruptcy is a legal process that discharges most debts, but has the disadvantage of making it more difficult for an individual to borrow in the future. To avoid the negative impacts of personal bankruptcy, individuals in debt have many bankruptcy alternatives.

In conclusion

Although, the recession is here with its many devastating situations: gasoline price increase, foreclosure, layoffs, stock market, and bankruptcy there ARE solutions. All you need is the right resources and information. Getting lazy and letting all life pass by is not one of them.

Solar Electric Energy Panels For Your Home

Solar electric panels take sun rays and turn those sun rays into storable and usable energy. The electricity you get from these solar energy panels will help save you money on your electricity and gas bills throughout the course of the year. If you can afford to make a move to solar power, the investment now will save you money in the future.

The solar panels work by using their silicon semiconductors and when the sunlight hits the silicon, it absorbs it. This absorbed sunlight looses the electrons within the panel so they move freely. The solar energy panels control these freely moving electrons in a way to create an electric current which we then can harness and use to power lights and other household appliances.

Making an investment on solar electric panels for your home will not only save you money on your utility bills, but the government also gives tax breaks to those who use solar electric panels. These tax breaks make the solar energy panels a lot cheaper now than what they used to be. Solar panels are now used by many businesses, buildings, and households alike. If you would like join the solar energy panel bandwagon, here are some things to consider.

You want to consider where you are going to install your solar electric panels. The location may be the most important thing to consider. You need to find a suitable spot away from trees and shaded areas. The rooftop is the most likely spot because it is at a high point and would probably receive the most sunlight away from any shade.

The next thing to consider is the price you are going to have to pay for your solar electric panels. Some panels, with installation can cost upwards of twenty-thousand dollars. That may seem like a lot of money but you have to consider how much money these solar energy panels will save you over decades of use.

solar panels on houseIf you dont have twenty-thousand dollars to invest right now on solar panels don’t worry. They now have much smaller solar energy panels you can purchase for under five-hundred dollars that will power smaller household appliances and will still save your household money and help protect the environment.

The full potential of solar electric energy panels has not yet been discovered but we are well on our way. Buying these solar panels now will prove to be a great investment for the future. Your mortgage loans and mortgage refinancing account will thank you.

LED Light Bulbs vs Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs

When deciding to make the switch from incandescent lighting to a more energy efficient option, you might assume that compact fluorescent lights (CFL) are the best way to go. However, although energy savings are roughly similar except in areas of high energy costs, there are some differences between LED and CFL technology that might influence your ultimate decision.

As has been popularly reported recently, CFLs do contain a small amount of mercury. Containing such a small amount does not take away from CFLs environmentally friendly reputation, and indeed are still an excellent choice over incandescent bulbs. However, for those who wish to eliminate the use of mercury altogether, LED light bulbs may be a better option. Should a CFL bulb break in your home, special handling techniques are required for clean up, as the mercury can escape from the bulb. This is not something to be concerned about with LED light bulbs.

One common concern with LED lights is that because the light is quite directed it can be difficult to use them to light up a room. While it is true that using some LED light bulbs in traditional upright floor lamps can wind up directing a stream of light at the ceiling, there are new bulbs and new light fixtures on the market that can alleviate this problem. However, if this is a concern for you, you might wish to use CFL bulbs in these areas and switch your accent lighting, such as bedside lamps and night lights to LED lighting. This can give you the best of both worlds.

There is also some growing concern, albeit not well documented, that CFLs in particular can create what is called “dirty electricity” which can cause fatigue, migraines, eye strain, and even skin irritation, among other symptoms. If you are concerned about this possibility, or if you think it may be possible you are suffering from it, LEDs might be a better option for lighting your home unless you like spending money which in that case you may as well take out a home loan or home equity loan.

Summer Break is Almost Here

I have a friend who I can’t stand right now cause she lost a lot of weight. I know I shouldn’t since she worked her ass off all winter trying to do it just in time for the bathing suit season this summer. I am proud of her too because it wasn’t through any crazy diet fad or a “miracle” pill promising to shed unwanted pounds. It was all hard work.

So like her I’m going to try and do the same thing. In between teaching classes, taking classes and applying for a consolidation loan, I’m going to start working out more.  exercise pic

Here is a list of the some of the top exercises recommended by Shape Magazine to get in shape this spring before the warm summer months ahead:

Kneeling Rotating Twist – Strengthens the abs, particularly obloquies, and back; stretches middle back and rear shoulders

Squat to Overhead Reach - Strengthens the quadriceps, hamstrings and butt; stretches front torso, front shoulders and hip flexors

Side Lift - Strengthens the obloquies and lateral hip flexors; stretches sides of torso

Overhead Leg Toss - Strengthens the hamstrings, butt and quadriceps; stretches hamstrings

Squat Dive - Strengthens the quadriceps, butt, hamstrings, chest, shoulders, triceps, abs and back; stretches inner thighs and lower back

Leg Circles - Strengthens the quadriceps, hamstrings, butt, inner thighs, upper hips and abs

I think I’m up to it! This blog and hopefully summer marks the beginning of a new me. I’m going to stop hiding behind oversized T-shirts and butt-camouflaging sarongs. This summer I’m buying that two-piece. Oh yes, it’s the summer of bikini confidence.
